In 2010 researchers from the Univ of CALIF-Los Angeles found that pancreatic tumor cells use fructose to divide and reproduce, debunking earlier assumptions that all sugars were the same. Tumor cells that were fed glucose and fructose used those sugars in two different ways, the research team said. 'Major significance for cancer patients' Their findings, which were published in the journal Cancer Research, could help explain earlier studies that have linked ingestion of fructose with pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest forms of the disease. "These findings show that cancer cells can readily metabolize fructose to increase proliferation," Dr. Anthony Heaney of UCLA's Jonsson Cancer Center and colleagues wrote in 2010. "They have major significance for cancer patients given dietary refined fructose consumption, and indicate that efforts to reduce refined fructose intake or inhibit fructose-mediated actions may disrupt cancer growth," he said. Americans, much more than people in most other industrialized nations, consume an incredible amount of fructose, mainly high fructose corn syrup, which is a mix of fructose and glucose used largely in SODAS, bread and a host of other processed foods.
Incredibly, there is still no consensus among politicians, industry experts and some healthcare specialists over whether high fructose corn syrup and other sugary ingredients increase the nation's collective belt line (though Natural News readers and most reasonable people who don't grow corn for a living already know the answer to that "debate"). That's likely why there hasn't been more public education about the consequences of consuming fructose-heavy, processed foods. Tumor cells thrive on all sugars That said, some groups know the truth and have tried to speak it loudly. The American Heart Association, for example, says too much sugar of any kind will not only bust your belt but increase your risk of heart disease and stroke. And a number of states, including New York and California, have considered levying a tax on sugary sodas to help pay for patients suffering from obesity-related diseases and who are covered under government health insurance programs. But these taxes have been successfully opposed, for the most part, with the help of millions of dollars in lobbying money from interest groups who say sugar is sugar.
Heaney's team found otherwise, Reuters reported. During trials, they grew pancreatic cancer cells and fed them both glucose and fructose. The tumor cells thrived on both kinds of sugars but proliferated with fructose. "Importantly, fructose and glucose metabolism are quite different," the team wrote.
"I think this paper has a lot of public health implications. Hopefully, at the federal level there will be some effort to step back on the amount of high fructose corn syrup in our diets," Heaney said in a statement. Consumption of high fructose grew rapidly in the U.S. - by 1,000 percent - between 1970 and 1990, about the time the obesity epidemic began in earnest.
History of disease linked to sugary diets High fructose corn syrup has also been linked to other medical conditions and diseases: -- A diet high in corn syrup causes the body to produce excess uric acid, which worsens gout - a condition caused by high levels of uric acid - according to a study published in the March 2012 Journal of Nutrition. -- Researchers at the Duke Univ in N>C. said high fructose consumption can worsen non-alcoholic fatty liver disease by "depleting their store of critically important molecules called ATP, which provide liver cells (and other body cells) energy for important cellular processes, including metabolism," Science Daily reported. -- A study published in the Journal of Nephrology found that ingestion of "dietary fructose" worsens kidney disease by inhibiting intestinal calcium absorption and inducing vitamin D deficiency.

Every metabolic function depends on the presence of water. Cities are built around abundant supplies of water. There are many industrial toxins present in our municipal water sources that must be avoided. Water is absolutely necessary for optimizing energy production and detoxification abilities within the body. The ideal source of water is as pure and unadulterated as possible from a natural spring. Unfortunately, our water supply is loaded with toxic contaminants. Here are a few we all need to be aware of and take measures to avoid:
Arsenic: This is a powerful cancer-causing agent. In 2001, the EPA lowered the maximum level permitted in drinking water from 50 ug/L to 10 ug/L due to the well-established carcinogenic risk. The Natural Resources Defense Council estimates that as many as 56 million Americans living in 25 states drink water with unsafe arsenic levels. Aluminum: This toxic heavy metal is linked with neurological, gastrointestinal and liver damage. Most city water has elevated levels of aluminum. Aluminum competes with calcium for skeletal absorption but does not mimic calcium's effects in the body. High aluminum reduces skeletal mineralization. It also retards the absorption of phosphorus, zinc, and selenium. Zinc and selenium are key immune system modulators. Aluminum causes deficiencies in these critical minerals and malcoordinates the immune system. Fluoride: This halogen molecule is a highly potent free radical in the body that damages neurological tissue, injures the immune system and hampers thyroid function among many other problems. Unfortunately, when chlorine is not filtered out of the water and is instead consumed in tap water, it destroys the natural microflora throughout the body. The most common disinfection techniques used at water treatment facilities today involve the use of chlorine, chloramines, and chlorine dioxide to kill harmful, disease-causing microorganisms in the water, making it safe to drink. Unfortunately, over the years scientists have discovered that toxic chemical byproducts form when these disinfectants react with natural organic matter like decaying vegetation in the source water. The most common disinfectant byproducts formed when chlorine is used are: •trihalomethanes (THMs) •haloacetic acids (HAAs) The EPA takes the dangers of THMs -- which are measured in parts per billion -- very seriously and regulates these compounds. The maximum annual average of THMs in your local water supply cannot exceed 80 ppb (parts-per-billion), and the maximum annual average of HAAs permitted by EPA regulations is 60 ppb. However even though these are allowed, ideally it would be best to have zero. These levels have been regularly adjusted downwards over the years as science progresses and gains a deeper appreciation of their true toxicity. As usual, cost is one reason -- and probably the sole reason -- water companies managed to prevent this EPA standard from being reduced even further. Water companies felt it would cost too much to remove a greater amount of these DBPs from their water, so they pushed for an elevated standard. Nevertheless, it's important to note that the EPA sets the goal for some of these byproducts at zero because they are so dangerous, but unfortunately the EPA goal would be impossible to enforce. Hence, if you are on a public water system -- meaning a utility company supplies your water -- it's extremely likely it contains chlorine and disinfection-byproducts and you will definitely want to consider purifying your family’s water with a water filtration system that can effectively remove DBPs.Slovak recommends requesting a water quality report from your local water purveyor at least once a year, to see how well your municipality maintains the EPA standards. Keep in mind however that the EPA’s recommended goal is zero! So if your municipality is on the high end, your water may be more hazardous than you’d like to imagine. If you are like me and obtain your water from a private well, then DBPs are a non-issue as they are only produced when chlorine is added, and it’s highly unusual to add chlorine to most all private well water systems. How Can DBPs Harm Your Health? Trihalomethanes (THMs) are Cancer Group B carcinogens, meaning they’ve been shown to cause cancer in laboratory animals.
DBPs have also been linked to reproductive problems in both animals and humans, and human studies suggest that lifetime consumption of chlorine-treated water can more than double the risk of bladder and rectal cancers in certain individuals. One such study found that smoking men who drank chlorinated tap water for more than 40 years faced double the risk of bladder cancer compared with smoking men who drank non-chlorinated water. A second study found that rates for rectal cancers for both sexes escalated with duration of consumption of chlorinated water. Individuals on low-fiber diets who also drank chlorinated water for over 40 years more than doubled their risk for rectal cancer, compared with lifetime drinkers of non-chlorinated water. As the vast majority of the U.S. population continues to receive and consume disinfected or chlorinated drinking water, we can assume that Americans are consuming disinfection byproducts every single day, and the number of related cancer cases could be substantial. DBPs are Even More Dangerous Through Skin Exposure!
As bad as it is to consume DBPs, they may wreak even more havoc when they’re absorbed through your skin! A study published in the Journal of Environmental Sciences last year found that swimming in a chlorinated pool presented an unacceptable cancer risk. They concluded that the cancer risk of trihalomethanes from various routes in descending order was: 1.skin exposure while swimming 2.gastro-intestinal exposure from tap water intake 3.skin exposure to tap water 4.gastro-intestinal exposure while swimming But the cancer risk from skin exposure while swimming was over 94 percent of the total cancer risk resulting from being exposed to THMs! THMs formed in chlorinated swimming pools have also been linked to spontaneous abortion, stillbirths and congenital malformations, even at lower levels. This is one of the primary reasons I rarely ever dip in a pool. I far prefer to swim in a lake or the ocean. The ocean is my favorite, and fortunately I get to do that regularly when I am in Maui over the winter. It always surprises me though how few people swim in the ocean, relative to spending their time in the pool right next to the ocean. Seems people would rather soak up these dangerous DBP toxins than swimming in natural healthy salt water. Other Dangers in Your Drinking Water As reported in New Scientist, a comprehensive survey of U.S. drinking water reveals that your drinking water is also likely laced with a wide variety of pharmaceuticals and hormonally active chemicals. The 11 most frequently detected compounds were: •Atenolol, a beta-blocker used to treat cardiovascular disease •Atrazine, an organic herbicide banned in the European Union which has been implicated in the decline of fish stocks and in changes in animal behavior •Carbamazepine, a mood-stabilizing drug used to treat bipolar disorder •Estrone, an estrogen hormone secreted by the ovaries and blamed for causing gender changes in fish •Gemfibrozil, an anti-cholesterol drug •Meprobamate, a tranquilizer used in psychiatric treatment •Naproxen, a painkiller and anti-inflammatory linked to increases in asthma incidence •Phenytoin, an anticonvulsant used to treat epilepsy •Sulfamethoxazole, an antibiotic •TCEP, a reducing agent used in molecular biology •Trimethoprim, another antibiotic So, What are Your Healthiest Water Options? Your best bet for ensuring your water does not contain DBPs and various pharmaceutical agents is to filter your own water, at home, using a reverse osmosis filter. While installing a filter to purify your drinking water is a wise decision as it will eliminate virtually all of the drugs and DBPs, it may not be enough. Your skin absorbs both water and chemicals -- as illustrated in the study on swimming pool contamination and cancer risk mentioned above – so you could still be exposing yourself to dangerous levels of contaminants when you: 1.Shower or bathe 2.Wash your hands 3.Wash laundry 4.Rinse fruits and vegetables 5.Wash dishes, glasses, and other utensils The biggest risk here is your shower. You can easily absorb as many toxins in one shower as you would by drinking tap water all week long. Prostate Cancer: 6 Things Men Should Know About Tomatoes, Fish Oil, Vitamin Supplements, Testosterone, PSA Tests ScienceDaily (Aug. 22, 2012) — When it comes to prostate cancer, there's a lot of confusion about how to prevent it, find it early and the best way -- or even whether -- to treat it. Below are six common prostate cancer myths along with research-based information from scientists at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center to help men separate fact from fiction.
________________________________________ Myth 1 -- Eating tomato-based products such as ketchup and red pasta sauce prevents prostate cancer. "The vast majority of studies show no association," said Alan Kristal, Dr.Ph., associate director of the Hutchinson Center's Cancer Prevention Program and a national expert in prostate cancer prevention. Kristal and colleagues last year published results of the largest study to date that aimed to determine whether foods that contain lycopene -- the nutrient that puts the red in tomatoes -- actually protect against prostate cancer. After examining blood levels of lycopene in nearly 3,500 men nationwide they found no association. "Scientists and the public should understand that early studies supporting an association of dietary lycopene with reduced prostate cancer risk have not been replicated in studies using serum biomarkers of lycopene intake," the authors reported in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention. "Recommendations of professional societies to the public should be modified to reflect the likelihood that increasing lycopene intake will not affect prostate cancer risk." Myth 2 -- High testosterone levels increase the risk of prostate cancer. "This is a lovely hypothesis based on a very simplistic understanding of testosterone metabolism and its effect on prostate cancer. It is simply wrong," Kristal said. Unlike estrogen and breast cancer, where there is a very strong relationship, testosterone levels have no association with prostate cancer risk, he said. A study published in 2008 in the Journal of the National Cancer Inst, which combined data from 18 large studies, found no association between blood testosterone concentration and prostate cancer risk, and more recent studies have confirmed this conclusion. Myth 3 -- Fish oil (omega-3 fatty acids) decrease prostate cancer risk. "This sounds reasonable, based on an association of inflammation with prostate cancer and the anti-inflammatory effects of omega-3 fatty acids," Kristal said. However, two large, well-designed studies -- including one led by Kristal that was published last year in the American Journal of Epidemiology -- have shown that high blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids increase the odds of developing high-risk prostate cancer. Analyzing data from a nationwide study of nearly 3,500 men, they found that those with the highest blood percentages of docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA, an inflammation-lowering omega-3 fatty acid commonly found in fatty fish, have two-and-a-half times the risk of developing aggressive, high-grade prostate cancer compared to men with the lowest DHA levels. "This very sobering finding suggests that our understanding of the effects of omega-3 fatty acids is incomplete," Kristal said. Myth 4 -- Dietary supplements can prevent prostate cancer. Several large, randomized trials that have looked at the impact of dietary supplements on the risk of various cancers, including prostate, have shown either no effect or, much more troubling, they have shown significantly increased risk. "The more we look at the effects of taking supplements, the more hazardous they appear when it comes to cancer risk," Kristal said. For example, the Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial (SELECT), the largest prostate cancer prevention study to date, was stopped early because it found neither selenium nor vitamin E supplements alone or combined reduced the risk of prostate cancer. A SELECT follow-up study published last year in JAMA found that vitamin E actually increased the risk of prostate cancer among healthy men. The Hutchinson Center oversaw statistical analysis for the study, which involved nearly 35,000 men in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico. Myth 5 -- We don't know which prostate cancers detected by PSA (prostate-specific antigen) screening need to be treated and which ones can be left alone. "Actually, we have a very good sense of which cancers have a very low risk of progression and which ones are highly likely to spread if left untreated," said biostatistician Ruth Etzioni, Ph.D., a member of the Hutchinson Center's Public Health Sciences Division. In addition to blood levels of PSA, indicators of aggressive disease include tumor volume (the number of biopsy samples that contain cancer) and Gleason score (predicting the aggressiveness of cancer by how the biopsy samples look under a microscope). Gleason scores range from 2-5 (low risk) and 6-7 (medium risk) to 8-10 (high risk).

Prostate cancer surgery once again found to be useless at saving lives, but successful at destroying sexual health Monday, July 30, 2012 by: Ethan A. These are the eye-opening findings of a new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), which reaffirms once again that prostate cancer surgery is basically just medical quackery. For his study, Dr. Timothy Wilt of the University of Minnesota (UM) School of Medicine evaluated 731 men diagnosed with prostate cancer, some of whom were told to have their prostates removed, and some of whom were told to simply undergo routine observation by their doctors. All the men were tracked and monitored in the years following their initial diagnosis.
10 years after their tumors were first discovered, 5.8% of the men who underwent prostate surgery ended up dying, while 8.4 percent of the men who were monitored apart from surgery ended up dying. According to the data, 47% of the men who underwent surgery died during the actual study, while 50% of the men who were monitored apart from surgery died during the study. After accounting for a margin of statistical error, the findings reveal that, regardless of whether or not a man diagnosed with prostate cancer undergoes surgery, his chances of dying are roughly the same as if he does nothing. But men who choose to forgo surgery are half as likely to suffer from urinary incontinence or erectile dysfunction.
"We think our results apply to the vast majority of men diagnosed with prostate cancer today," said Dr. Wilt to the Chicago Tribune. He and others in the field of oncology are realizing that most men who receive prostate cancer surgery do not need it, and that undergoing this treatment could lead to other, often permanent, side effects and complications. Since the risk of dying from prostate cancer among those diagnosed with the condition is a mere three percent, opting for surgery, as many men do, is more often than not a mistake. Worse, many detected prostate tumors are not even malignant, a fact that, if more widely known, would probably deter many men from choosing invasive surgery.
Prevailing thoughts about cancer; however, seem to often override logical consideration and decision-making, as many men rush in to "do something" without fully evaluating the risks and benefits. This is also true in regards to the prostate cancer screenings, which have similarly been shown to be unreliable, and to often result in needless surgery and other treatments.

GMO wars - Monsanto suing DuPont to see who will dominate the world's food supply

(NaturalNews) Biotechnology giant Monsanto is suing one of its largest rivals, DuPont, for what the company says are violations of a licensing agreement established between the two firms back in 2002. And at the very same time, DuPont is suing Monsanto for allegedly, illegally withholding important details from the federal patent office about its Roundup Ready trait, as well as for allegedly engaging in anticompetitive business practices that restrict competitive agriculture.
Many people are unaware of this, but DuPont's Pioneer Hi-Bred division, which produces seeds, several years ago tried to develop its own genetically-modified (GM) soybean product known as Optimum GAT that was intended to rival Monsanto's Roundup Ready GM soy product. When the original Optimum GAT product failed to perform as intended; however, DuPont decided to add Monsanto's Roundup Ready trait onto Optimum GAT's existing glyphosate-resistant trait, a fact that did not come to light until 2009.
Once DuPont's trait-blending activity became public knowledge, Monsanto initiated legal action against DuPont for allegedly using its own Roundup Ready trait in violation of the established licensing agreement between the two companies, which prohibited DuPont's creation of a GM soy product containing multiple GM traits. According to Monsanto, DuPont illegally used the Roundup Ready trait without a license in hundreds of seed lines back in 2008.
"For years, they told the world GAT was going to work," said George C. Lombardi, an attorney for Monsanto, during Monsanto's opening arguments before the jury. "When it failed, they relied on the Roundup Ready product."
But DuPont, in its own defense, says Monsanto's Roundup Ready patent is unenforceable because it was not properly obtained. According to the company, Monsanto failed to disclose pertinent details in its patent filing about how Roundup Ready seeds work, and how they are made. In fact, DuPont alleges Monsanto actually lied to the federal government in order to obtain the patent, which means it cannot legally be considered valid.
"(Monsanto's Roundup Ready soybean patent) is invalid and unenforceable because Monsanto intentionally deceived the United States Patent and Trademark Office on several occasions as it procured the patent," said Thomas L. Sager, DuPont Senior Vice President and General Counsel, in a recent statement.
The trial, which is expected to last several weeks, officially began on July 9, 2012. Some commentators believe the case will more than likely be settled rather than take its full course because neither Monsanto nor DuPont want to be hit with a surprise verdict. If the case does proceed; however, Monsanto's Roundup Ready patent could end up being declared null and void, which would be a significant victory for food freedom.
