Sea Cucumber Effective in Reducing Tumors
and Killing 95% of Cancer Cells
For centuries, the cucumber is traditionally used in the Chinese Medicine, but this practice seems incomprehensible in the U.S. This shadowy idea may soon be changing because of increasing number of scientific evidences that proved that the extract of sea cucumber has the potential to kill the cancer cells while boosting the immune system.
Ethan Evers, the author of “The Eden Prescription”, mentioned that researches on sea cucumber demonstrated its powerful effect in killing liver, pancreatic, colon, skin, prostate, and breast and lung cancer cells. The extracts are also tested if it is effective in killing glioblastoma and leukemia cells. These promising studies may prove that there is another potential natural medicine that can be added as anti-cancer foods.
Frondoside A – Key Compound in Sea Cucumber
Scientist believes that the probable key compound responsible for this anti-cancer effect is frondoside A. It is a triterpenoid which is composed of diverse and organic compounds that are found in oleoresins and essential oils of plants.
This recent study was published in Plos One, confirmed how frondoside is a powerful anti-cancer agent. In fact, researchers found out that it can kill as much as 95% of breast cancer cells, 90% of melanoma cells, 95% of liver cancer calls and 85% to 88% of three different kinds of lung cancer.
Benefits of Frondoside A
Author Ethan Evers reported that the benefits of the compound does not prevent in inducing a direct effect on programmed cell death or apoptosis. Frondoside A can inhibit angiogenesis, which is the ability of tumors to grow newer blood vessels so it can obtain nutrients and stops the metastasis of cancer which may result to cell invasion and migration. What is more intriguing is that the frondoside A has the ability to activate the natural killer cells of the immune system to aid in attacking the cancer cells.
This finding was proven for breast cancer but it could also probably apply to all kinds of cancers, because it actually involves the immune system and not having a direct effect on cancer cells. This could potentially explain why this compound was very effective in reducing lung tumors in mice that it rivaled the performance of chemotherapeutic drugs.
When this compound was introduced to mice with non-small cell lung cancer, it was found out that frondoside A can help shrink the tumors by 40% in just about 10 days! The traditional chemotherapeutic drugs can reduce the tumors by 47 percent. But it is important to note that the risk of treatment is greater compared with the risk or side-effects of cucumber.
Probably because there is no documented risk factor associated with sea cucumbers. The amount of Frondoside A needed to achieve the results was minute which is less than a milligram for an adult who weighs around 165 pounds.
While the sea cucumber extracts are not yet currently offered as treatment for cancer particularly in the traditional doctor office. You can still find powdered and dried sea cucumber in nearby health stores. It is packaged with a solution to arthritis and other similar conditions.
In the era of the modern medicine, more studies are being conducted to explore the healing possibilities of traditional and alternative medicine. Probably, people realized what the ancient people have known centuries ago!
